Parts of an Experiment and Skills

We started to investigate the scientific process as a system.
In the next week, we will look at the structure and specific parts found in experiments.  Students will need to identify the different parts given an experimental scenario.

Starting with the following article titled, "Life Saver," we read about scientists' methods to experiment and solve problems.

Experimental Vocabulary:
  • question
  • hypothesis
  • procedure
  • variables: independent and dependent
  • constant

Who said the Mythbusters could only have fun!?

After watching Mythbusters and experimenting on our own with carbonation and nucleic sites the students wanted to mimic the experiment.  So we did!

Students experimenting with carbonation

Students are trying to mimic the movement of the Sewer Lice using common objects.

Here is a video and picture of them developing an experiment to model their movement.

Myth Busters Parts of an Experiment

Watch this video and take note of important parts of an experiment.

This video can also help you understand the importance of only changing one variable.

Systems Approach and Lorax Concept Maps

Here are some of our students' concept maps in action!
They are making connections and showing interactions within the ecosystem in the Land of Lorax.

Systems Approach - The Lorax Movie

Today we talked about a systems approach to science and how to breakdown complicated things into systems and sub-systems.

Here is an example of a science notebook.

Mystery Cubes

Today in class we investigated what good science looked like.

Mystery Cube Activity
We modeled trying to find out:
What does the bottom of the cube look like?

Students came up with the following list of skills used today in class.

Here is a template of a cube if you want to try to put it together.

My Science Summer

Our first activity is "My Scientific Summer."  We will ask you to think of an aspect of the summer that you can relate to a discipline or disciples of science.
