Study Guide for Cell Organelle and Cell Theory Assessment

Cell History and Structure Function 2017

Cell-related Topics:

You should be able to explain...

1. How are cells classified?
Describe the classification of cells based on:
  • Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
  • Plant vs Animal

2. What makes up cells?
Compare and contrast the structure and function of organelles found in plant and animal cells.
Know the 12 organelles on the Spreadsheet
Be able to list the function when given an organelle.
Identify the organelle by the structure.

3. What are the parts to the Cell Theory?
Understand the three parts of the cell theory.
Who were the scientists responsible for the cell theory?

4. What is the History of Science surrounding cells?
Who founded the first microscope?
Who was the first scientist to coin the term “cell?”

5. What are the parts to a microscope?

6. How do you correctly use a microscope?

Cell Organelles

Animal and Plant Cell Foldable

Examples

Essential Cell Organelles
Cell wall
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
Nuclear membrane
Nucleolus
Vacuoles
Mitochondria
Endoplasmic reticulum
Ribosomes
Golgi body
Chloroplasts

For each organelle you are responsible for:
    • Where it is present in an animal cell, plant cell, or both
    • Where it is found in the cell
    • What the organelle looks like (structure)
    • What the organelle does (function)

Parts of an Experiment and Skills

We started to investigate the scientific process as a system.
In the next week, we will look at the structure and specific parts found in experiments.  Students will need to identify the different parts given an experimental scenario.

Starting with the following article titled, "Life Saver," we read about scientists' methods to experiment and solve problems.

Click to access the "Life Saver" Article

    Experimental Vocabulary:
    • question
    • hypothesis
    • procedure
    • variables: independent and dependent
    • constant
    • control
    • conclusion
    • observations
